English is the common language for conducting business but from time to time, Indian people may converse in another language.  Generally, they will not speak another language out of respect while a foreigner is amongst them.  Indian English has a distinctive British flavor based upon the occupancy by the British in India for many years.  Additionally, many Indians have trouble conjugating and translating their thoughts when their first language may not have been English.  In the event there is some confusion about what someone has said, it is not offensive to ask to have their statement or question repeated.

Time format is expressed in dd/mm/yy so July 4, 2005 is 04/07/05.

Relationships are very important in doing business with Indians and it is important for that they establish a social repore with their colleagues before doing business right away.  It is extremely important to establish a mutual trust and respect before serious business is conducted.

Indians are negotiators and always looking for a good bargain.  Don’t be surprised by this tactic but be open and flexible to all proposals.  Even if there is no room for negotiation it is better to listen than to immediately say that your stance is non-negotiable.  This is construed as stand-off and aloof and in flexible and may hinder your business development.
